The UK is facing a drought warning as a heatwave intensifies across Europe, with temperatures expected to reach 30°C in parts of Italy and Sardinia next week. Higher than average pressure over the continent is driving warm weather, raising concerns about drought and wildfires in Australia, where most regions have very low chances of reaching average rainfall.
BBC meteorologist Phil Avery warned of unsettled weather, with heavy rain expected on Monday across the Alpine region and Italy. Drier conditions are forecast for Spain, Portugal, and eastern France. On Tuesday, there are concerns about intense rainfall in southern France and northern Spain, with several hundred millimetres possible in some locations.
European weather blogs predict extremely warm days for late October, with afternoon temperatures locally reaching 26 to 29°C. An extreme temperature anomaly is expected across the northern Balkans towards Poland, with similar patterns continuing through mid-week as warm air moves into eastern Europe and western Russia.
Meteorologist Marko Korosec stated that temperatures across east-central Europe will intensify to 30°C next week. He also warned of extreme rainfall, up to 400mm, sweeping across the western Alps over the next three days.
