FIFA has implemented a rule change for the 2026 World Cup that wipes all yellow cards after the group stage, giving England stars Declan Rice and Jarell Quansah a suspension lifeline ahead of the knockout rounds.
How the Rule Works
Under standard tournament regulations, two yellow cards result in an automatic one-match ban. However, FIFA's revised rules for the expanded 48-team World Cup erase individual bookings at the end of the group phase, offering a clean slate to all players. A second amnesty occurs after the quarter-finals, ensuring no player misses the final due to accumulated cautions unless they receive a red card in the semi-finals.
England manager Gareth Southgate strategically benched Rice for the final group match against Panama due to a minor fitness issue, which also protected the midfielder from potential suspension after his yellow card against Ghana. Quansah received his caution during the routine 2-0 win over Panama, making him and Rice the only England players booked in the group stage.
Impact on England's Knockout Campaign
With the yellow cards wiped, both Rice and Quansah can play aggressively in the round of 32 clash against DR Congo on Wednesday without fear of a ban. However, Quansah is expected to miss the match due to injury, while Rice is likely to start. The rule change prevents players from being sidelined in crucial elimination games for minor early fouls, protecting the integrity of the knockout stages.
