A woman attended Accident and Emergency after jellyfish tentacles struck her eye while on a yacht anchored off Moelfre bay, on Anglesey's east coast, on August 11. The incident occurred shortly before 3pm, with the yacht a very short distance from the Moelfre RNLI lifeboat station.
Details of the incident
The woman was recovering a line in the water that carried jellyfish tentacles, one of which came into contact with her eye, causing intense pain. Moelfre RNLI attended and evacuated her to the lifeboat station. After a quick medical check and advice, it was decided that she would book a taxi and make her own way to the emergency department at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor for further treatment.
RNLI explains how it happened
Moelfre RNLI Coxswain Vince Jones explained that the sting occurred while "recovering a line in the water which had tentacles all over it." He added: "Either rubbed her eye with some remnants on her hands, or it flicked off the rope and onto her face/ eye. We are unsure of how exactly, but she was in a lot of discomfort and the hospital said they needed to ensure there was no remaining debris in the eye."
Public reaction
In comments on the RNLI station's report, one person said: "Wow that must have been so painful and frightening. Those jellyfish stings are very painful I believe. Thank you RNLI, always ready for an emergency."
