The United Kingdom intercepted two Russian military aircraft that approached the HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier in the Norwegian Sea last week, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed on Monday. The incident occurred on July 2, as the carrier strike group was operating in the Arctic Circle to support NATO missions.
Unsafe and Unprofessional Maneuvers
According to the MoD, the two Russian 'Bear F' maritime patrol aircraft repeatedly approached the UK carrier strike group and engaged in what was described as an “unsafe and unprofessional” manner. The Russian planes dropped multiple sonobuoys—devices used as underwater microphones to track submarines—near the HMS Prince of Wales.
In response, British F-35 Lightning II jets scrambled to intercept the Russian aircraft and escorted them away from the carrier vessel. The MoD emphasized that the interception was a routine but necessary measure to ensure the safety of the carrier group.
Strategic Context
The HMS Prince of Wales had been deployed to the Arctic Circle as part of a broader NATO effort to bolster defenses in the region. The carrier strike group includes supporting vessels and aircraft, with the F-35 jets providing advanced stealth capabilities. The interception highlights ongoing tensions between NATO and Russia in strategically sensitive areas.
This is a developing story, and further details are expected as the MoD releases additional information.
