Two fires in 24 hours at Huyton school playing field

Firefighters were called to Hope Street Primary School's playing field near Ashbury Road at 7.25pm on August 2 after reports of a grass fire. One fire engine attended, finding a burning area approximately 50m by 50m.

First blaze extinguished

Crews used Pac Liders (water-filled bags with pump-action hoses) and beaters to battle the flames. The fire was out by 7.45pm, and after damping down, they left at 8.14pm. Video footage from Huyton Times showed large smoke plumes rising from the charred ground.

Second, larger fire

At 3.14pm on August 3, crews returned to the same field for another grass fire. A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "On arrival crews found a grass fire measuring approximately 400m by 400m. Fire crews fought the fire using beaters and worked to create natural breaks that would prevent the fire from spreading."
