Scotland's Best Seaside Towns: St Andrews Wins with Golden Sands

Consumer champion Which? has published its ranking of Scotland's best seaside towns, with St Andrews taking the top spot with an impressive score of 81 per cent. The Fife town is celebrated for its three-mile stretch of golden sand at West Sands beach, historic cobbled streets, and world-famous golf links.

St Andrews: A Coastal Gem with Michelin-Star Dining

St Andrews is renowned globally as the home of golf, but the town offers far more than its iconic Old Course. Visitors can explore independent shops and cafes, or walk along West Sands beach, which gained fame from the opening scene of Chariots of Fire. Food lovers are drawn to several Michelin Guide-listed restaurants, as well as local favourites like Fisher & Donaldson bakery and Jannettas Gelateria, where queues often form for its renowned ice cream.

Crail and Other Top-Rated Towns

In second place is Crail, another Fife favourite, scoring 80 per cent. This picturesque fishing village features a working harbour, whitewashed cottages, and scenic coastal paths. Linked by the Fife Coastal Path, Crail is one of Scotland's sunniest spots, ideal for enjoying fresh seafood, relaxing on small sandy beaches, or browsing galleries and craft shops.

Rounding out the top five are North Berwick and Plockton, both scoring 77 per cent, followed by Dornoch and Tobermory on 75 per cent. Each offers unique attractions, from North Berwick's beaches and seabird colonies to Plockton's palm trees and sheltered harbour.

Lower Rankings: Portree and Ayr

At the lower end, Portree on the Isle of Skye scored 63 per cent, while Ayr placed last at 59 per cent. Despite these scores, both remain popular destinations. Portree is one of Scotland's most photographed coastal spots, with its colourful waterfront and busy harbour. Ayr boasts a wide sandy beach stretching for miles along the Firth of Clyde, with views of the Isle of Arran, plus a traditional promenade and links to Robert Burns.
