Rescue crews searched the River Mersey overnight after a member of the public reported a man in the water. The RNLI lifeboat was launched from New Brighton at around 11.45pm on Saturday, August 29, following the report.
Coastguard helicopter joins the search
The HM Coastguard helicopter took off from Caernarfon about half an hour later and began sweeping the river, focusing mainly on the southern section between the city centre and Grassendale. The crew landed briefly at Liverpool John Lennon Airport before resuming the search between Ellesmere Port and Oglet shore.
Search stood down with no one found
The search lasted more than three hours. An RNLI spokesperson confirmed that nobody was located and that the search was stood down this morning. Merseyside Police said there were no further sightings of anyone in the river and the report was being treated as “false call, good intent”.
