The North East of England has reason to celebrate as two of its seaside locations have claimed the top two spots in the latest Which? rankings of the best seaside towns in the UK. For the sixth consecutive year, the Northumberland village of Bamburgh has been named the best, while Tynemouth has secured second place.
Bamburgh Retains Top Spot
Which? surveyed over 5,300 people about their experiences at UK seaside destinations over the past year, evaluating criteria such as beach quality, scenery, food and drink, accommodation, tourist attractions, shopping, and value for money. Bamburgh achieved an overall destination score of 84%, earning five stars for its beach, seafront, and scenery. The village has consistently ranked high across all categories, cementing its reputation as a premier seaside destination.
Tynemouth Takes Second Place
Tynemouth followed closely with an overall score of 82%, just 2% behind Bamburgh. It received five stars for its seafront and pier as well as its food and drink offerings. One visitor praised the “wonderful fish and chips,” while another highlighted the “magnificent” golden sand at King Edward's Bay and Longsands beaches. The town's vibrant atmosphere and coastal charm have made it a favorite among travelers.
Other North East Representation
The top three was completed by St Andrews in Scotland, which took the bronze medal position. Whitley Bay also made the top 30, securing 27th place. It scored highest for its seafront and pier, earning its only five-star rating, and received four stars for food and drink, value for money, and its beach. The North East's strong showing underscores the region's appeal as a seaside destination.
Expert Comments
Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel, said: “The North East has emerged as this year’s favourite seaside spot, a reflection of its outstanding beaches and the fact that holidays here can be fantastic value for money. It also shows that there are special seaside towns in every corner of the UK. From Swanage to Plockton, Southwold to Conwy, you’ll have a great time in many of the country’s lesser-known destinations, and should save some money too. Whether you're returning to a much-loved seaside town or discovering a hidden gem, there’s something for everyone.”
Ranking Methodology
The Which? survey asked participants to rate destinations on multiple factors, including beach quality, scenery, food and drink, accommodation, tourist attractions, shopping, and value for money. The overall destination score reflects the average of these ratings, with star ratings assigned for specific categories. The survey included 5,300 respondents who had visited UK seaside towns in the last year.
