A section of Manorwood Drive in Whiston was cordoned off this afternoon after an electrical manhole cover burst into flames.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to the road at 1.35pm on Friday, August 28, following reports of an electrical fire. One fire engine arrived at the scene at 1.43pm.
Crews tackle blaze and cordon off area
Firefighters found an electrical manhole cover on fire, with nearby bushes also catching alight. A cordon was put in place around the area while crews dealt with the incident.
Dramatic footage shared with the ECHO shows smoke billowing from the ground before the manhole cover sparked into flames. Photographs taken near the scene also show thick grey smoke rising from the ground as fire crews tackled the blaze.
Scottish Power called to the scene
Crews used a CO2 extinguisher to put out the flames and established a cordon around the area. Scottish Power was contacted, and once a representative arrived, firefighters handed over the scene and left at 2.57pm.
The cause of the fire has not been confirmed.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire crews were called to Manorwood Drive, Whiston, this afternoon after reports of an electrical fire.
"Crews were alerted at 1.35pm and on scene at 1.43pm, with one fire engine in attendance. Crews arrived to find an electrical manhole cover on fire which had caused bushes nearby to catch fire.
"Firefighters used a CO2 extinguisher to fight the fire and established a cordon. The attendance of Scottish Power was requested and on the arrival of their representative, crews handed over the scene and left at 2.57pm."
