A man in his 70s has died after a light aircraft crashed in a field near Guildford. Surrey Police confirmed the pilot was pronounced dead at the scene, and an investigation has been launched.
Crash in Worplesdon field
Surrey Police responded to a report of a light aircraft crash in a field in Worplesdon, just outside Guildford, at around 3.30pm on Tuesday. Ambulance and fire crews also attended the scene.
The aircraft came down in a field north of Gravetts Lane. The pilot, a man in his 70s, was declared dead at the location. His next of kin have been informed.
Emergency response and investigation
A spokesperson for Surrey Police told Surrey Live: “Shortly after 3.30pm on Tuesday, October 6, officers responded to a light aircraft crash in a field in Worplesdon Close to Worplesdon Road.
“This involved a large emergency services presence in the area including partners from Surrey Fire & Rescue Service and the South East Coast Ambulance Service.
“Sadly, the pilot of the aircraft, a man in his 70s, was pronounced deceased at the location. His next of kin have been informed.
“An investigation into the circumstances of the crash will be carried out by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.”
Ambulance service statement
A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: “South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) was called just after 3.30pm on Tuesday, October 6 following reports of a light aircraft crash in a field off Gravetts Lane in Guildford.
“Crews including a critical care paramedic attended the incident and were joined at the scene by the Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex, as well as Surrey Police and Surrey Fire & Rescue.
“Sadly, a male patient was declared deceased at the scene.”
The circumstances which led to the crash remain unclear, and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch will carry out a full investigation.
