A JetBlue Airways pilot reported that the aircraft struck a drone while descending toward John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport at approximately 7:15am on June 29, 2026. The pilot stated the drone made contact with a section just above the cockpit at an altitude of 3,000 feet. Despite the collision, the pilot confirmed to air traffic control that they were able to continue landing without assistance.
Pilot's Report to Air Traffic Control
The pilot informed air traffic control: "We collided with a drone back there in the turn as we were coming to ASALT, just wanted to pass to you." The aircraft landed safely, and a post-flight inspection found no damage to the plane as a result of the incident.
Context and Recent Similar Incidents
JFK International Airport is among major US airports hosting World Cup visitors, with New York serving as a host city for the tournament. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed it will investigate the incident, though no information regarding the drone type has been released.
This incident follows a similar occurrence on June 26, when a United Airlines pilot reported spotting a drone while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport. That drone did not strike the aircraft, and the pilot informed air traffic control. According to ABC reports, a pilot from another airline had also spotted what appeared to be a small drone flying in the vicinity earlier that day. Both planes landed without incident.
United Airlines Response
United Airlines released a statement saying: "United flight 1513 reported a potential drone sighting prior to arriving in Newark. The flight landed safely, and customers deplaned normally at the gate."
