A Jet2 flight from London Stansted to Ibiza was forced to make an abrupt U-turn after signalling a mid-air emergency. The aircraft, a 27-year-old Boeing 737-800, broadcast the emergency “squawk 7700” code – the international signal for a general emergency – while cruising at 35,000ft.
Emergency declared over northern France
Flight LS1473 departed London Stansted Airport at 8.10am bound for Ibiza when it declared the emergency roughly an hour into the journey. The pilots executed an unscheduled 180-degree turn over northern France and headed towards Paris, according to flight tracking data.
The aircraft then made a rapid descent as air traffic controllers prioritised it for an emergency landing at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport shortly before 11am.
Aircraft details and response
The plane involved is a Boeing 737-800, a twin-engine narrow-body airliner registered as G-JZHF. It first entered service in 1999 and previously flew with other carriers, including Dutch low-cost airline Transavia, before joining Jet2’s fleet, AirLive reports.
The nature of the emergency has not yet been officially confirmed by Jet2 – the Mirror has reached out to the airline for a comment. Emergency ground crews and airport emergency services at Paris Charles de Gaulle were alerted and positioned on standby ahead of the plane’s arrival.
Flight to resume from Paris
The flight touched down on runway 27L at Paris CDG. According to the latest information, the airline is planning to resume the flight from Paris to Ibiza soon.
