Iran has launched multiple drones towards commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz since Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on Sunday, according to a US official who spoke to NBC News.
US Forces Intercept Drones
The official said the drones were deployed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), adding that US forces intercepted and destroyed the aircraft before they could threaten commercial shipping or American personnel in the region.
NBC News reported that the IRGC has carried out the drone launches every night since the agreement was signed electronically.
Background
The Strait of Hormuz is a key global shipping route, and any threats to commercial vessels there can have significant economic and geopolitical implications.
The drone launches come just days after the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding, raising questions about Iran's commitment to the agreement.
US forces remain on high alert in the region to ensure the safety of commercial shipping and American personnel.
