Shocking footage has emerged showing a Delta Airlines plane's engine bursting into flames during takeoff from a Brazilian airport, prompting terrified screams from passengers and an immediate emergency return. The incident occurred on Sunday aboard Delta Flight DL 104, an Airbus A330-300 traveling from Sao Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Engine Failure and Passenger Panic
The aircraft, carrying 272 passengers and 14 crew members, suffered a severe mechanical issue with its left engine shortly after departure. Video recorded by a passenger onboard vividly captured the engine sporadically spitting fire during the initial ascent before becoming completely engulfed in flames. The dark sky was illuminated by the blazing engine on the left side of the plane, with audible screams and cries from frightened travelers.
Emergency Response and Safe Landing
According to reports, materials began falling from the aircraft while it was still alight, igniting fires on the ground below. The pilot swiftly declared a 'mayday' and was alerted by an air traffic controller who stated, 'Delta, you have fire on your wings.' The pilot confirmed, 'We know, we will need to return,' halting the climb at 4,500 feet and executing an emergency landing back at the terminal.
The plane made a safe return to Guarulhos International Airport, where it was met by Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting teams. A Delta spokesperson informed Travel Pulse that passengers were subsequently transported to the terminal by bus. The airline emphasized, 'The safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority. We apologize to our customers for this delay in their travels.' Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although the flight was ultimately canceled.
Context of Recent Aviation Incidents
This mechanical mishap follows a recent tragedy at LaGuardia Airport in New York City, where an Air Canada flight collided with a firetruck on March 22, resulting in the deaths of two pilots. That incident involved a flight from Montreal landing around 11:40 PM, striking a Port Authority rescue vehicle on the runway. The Delta engine fire underscores ongoing concerns in aviation safety, despite the successful outcome in this case.
