A British man has been rescued alive nearly a week after devastating flash floods killed more than 1,000 people across Nepal and neighbouring China. He was among 119 people rescued from mud and debris during search and rescue operations in Nepal, officials said this afternoon.
Rescue details and missing nationals
The survivor had been among 33 British nationals reported missing in Nepal, while a further 15 were listed as missing in Tibet two days ago, bringing the total across both areas to 48. A search and rescue spokesperson said: “We have rescued 118 Nepalese people… 44 are female and 74 are male. We have also rescued one British male during this search and rescue operation.”
UK response and ongoing search
The rescue came after a UK rapid deployment team arrived in Nepal on Saturday to help British nationals and their families. Specially trained crisis response staff are working with the British embassy and local authorities. More than 4,500 people remain missing overall following the catastrophic floods, according to reports, as rescue teams continue searching across the devastated region.
Identification challenges
The scale of the death toll is also creating major difficulties for authorities trying to identify and return victims to their families. Only 20 of those killed have reportedly so far been reunited with loved ones.
