Firefighters are battling a large fire at a scrap metal and tyres site on Boulder Bridge Lane in Carlton, Barnsley, with ten fire engines and specialist vehicles on the scene.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said the blaze involves scrap metal and tyres and that crews expect to remain at the site through the night and into tomorrow morning. Residents have been urged to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed because of a large amount of smoke.
Ten engines and aerial ladder deployed
The fire service confirmed that ten fire engines, one aerial ladder platform and a number of operational support vehicles are attending the incident. In an earlier statement, the service said eight fire engines and several specialist vehicles were initially at the scene.
“We anticipate to be on scene throughout the night and into tomorrow morning. Please continue to avoid the area. Those living nearby and anyone who can smell smoke in the wider area should keep their windows and doors closed,” the fire service said.
Smoke visible from Leeds
Huge plumes of thick black smoke from the fire have been reported as far away as Leeds. Residents across South Yorkshire said they could see the flames or smoke from the motorway.
One resident said they could smell it from Monkbretton, while another said their garden in Cudworth is “covered in black soot”. Others reported seeing it from Greasbrough and from the A65 in Leeds.
“It's definitely a bad one, (you) can see how bad it is in Royston. You can see the flames as well as smoke,” said one resident.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue earlier said: “We currently have 8 fire engines and a number of specialist vehicles at an incident on Boulder Bridge Lane, Carlton, Barnsley. Please avoid the area while crews work to bring this incident under control. Anyone living nearby should keep their doors and windows closed due to a large amount of smoke in the area.”
