More than 150,000 people have been left stranded in Indonesia as the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau severely disrupted air traffic. All flights at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, near the capital Jakarta, were cancelled after ash from the volcano was detected in the airspace near the hub.
Five Airports Suspended Operations
Operations at five other airports were also suspended. Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said hundreds of flights have been affected and urged airlines to consider diverting some flights to other airports.
The volcanic eruption sent a massive cloud of ash 50,000 feet into the sky, according to reports.
Eruption Timeline
The volcano started erupting late on Friday night and rocked its surrounding areas with two more powerful eruptions on Sunday.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the disruption to air travel affects thousands of passengers across the region.
