An air ambulance carrying six people has gone missing while travelling from Bermuda to Boston, prompting an urgent search by the US Coast Guard. The aircraft failed to arrive at its destination, and search efforts are currently focused near Nantucket, Massachusetts.
Aircraft lost contact after sudden descent
The plane, owned by Latitude Air Ambulance, had been performing a medical evacuation in Bermuda. FlightAware data shows it plummeted around 11,000 feet from 25,000 feet just after 1am. A final ping was recorded around 1.30am, shortly before it was scheduled to land.
It is unclear who is on board the plane, but it typically operates with two pilots, a nurse, and a respiratory therapist.
Operator expresses cautious optimism
Clarence Togeretz, Latitude’s Director of Flight Operations, told NBC News: ‘We always get rather concerned when our crew doesn’t report to us in a timely manner.’
‘But I will say that again, optimistically and positively, that doesn’t mean that the worst has happened.’
This is a breaking news story, and further updates are expected shortly.
