NASA's Mars Perseverance rover has captured an image of an unusual rock formation on the Red Planet that bears a striking resemblance to a medieval helmet or the Sorting Hat from the Harry Potter series. The photograph, taken on 5 August by the rover's Left Mastcam-Z camera, was voted by space enthusiasts as NASA's Image of the Week.
The rock, wider at the base and tapering to a point, sparked lively debate online. One user commented: "The Planet of the Sorting Hats has been found!" while others likened it to a "landed weather balloon" or "a relic from an ancient sea." Facebook user Sid Niknezhad jokingly suggested it was "Martian buffalo's dung."
Scientists believe the object is a naturally formed rock shaped by geological processes such as wind erosion, volcanic activity, or mineral precipitation from ancient groundwater. The rock is covered in small spherical mineral deposits called spherules, which form when groundwater passes through pores in sedimentary rocks, though the exact formation process remains uncertain.
The Mastcam-Z instrument, a pair of zoom-capable cameras on the rover's mast, enables high-resolution imaging to identify such features. The Perseverance rover is part of NASA's mission to search for signs of ancient microbial life and assess Mars' past habitability. It collects core samples of rock and regolith for potential return to Earth by a future mission.
This is not the first time pareidolia—the tendency to perceive familiar shapes in random patterns—has led to intriguing sightings on Mars. In August last year, NASA posted an image of a rock structure resembling a shark fin and a crab claw, which went viral. The agency invited comments, with one user joking about an "almighty great cosmic crab."
