A viral TikTok challenge has had tragic consequences in the United States, resulting in a teenage boy being charged with manslaughter. The incident highlights the grave dangers associated with social media trends that encourage reckless behaviour.
The 17-year-old from Ohio stands accused after a 18-year-old participant, Mason McChrystal, suffered fatal injuries. The group was allegedly taking part in a 'surfing' challenge, which involves individuals riding on the exterior of a moving vehicle.
The Fatal Incident
According to authorities, the event unfolded in August 2023 in the town of West Chester. The teenagers were reportedly attempting to film content for the video-sharing platform. The victim fell from the moving car and sustained a severe head injury. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The driver of the vehicle, whose identity is protected due to being a minor, now faces a first-degree misdemeanor manslaughter charge. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of up to 180 days in a juvenile detention centre and a fine of $1,000.
