During the November 25 broadcast, co-hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls interviewed Debbie Duncan about the horrific online harassment she has endured since her 19-year-old son's death. Jay Slater disappeared during his first overseas holiday with friends last summer, sparking a massive search operation.
After an agonising 29-day search, the teenager's remains were discovered in the treacherous Juan Lopez ravine by a mountain rescue team. An inquest later determined he had suffered fatal head wounds after losing his balance and falling.
The Dark Side of Social Media
Ed Balls introduced the segment by explaining that Debbie is campaigning for Jay's Law, new legislation to protect grieving families from online abuse. Susanna Reid added that the proposed law would prevent other families from experiencing similar torment.
The tragedy triggered a social media storm filled with conspiracy theories that persisted even after Jay's body was found. Online trolls falsely claimed Jay had been killed or involved in drug transactions, with some even blaming his mother.
"It's difficult. The pain of losing a child. Just trying to fight through it, but it's not been easy, especially with all the noise in the background that continues on a daily basis," Debbie told the presenters.
She revealed the abuse took a dark turn when people suggested the disappearance was a setup and that she was involved in a money-making scheme. "I wish that had been the case, that he was going to appear, but that's still obviously used against us now," she said emotionally.

In one of the most shocking revelations, Debbie disclosed that trolls had sent her photoshopped images of her son while he was still missing, leaving both Susanna Reid and Ed Balls visibly stunned.
