Jesse Eisenberg has broken his silence after it was confirmed that Jeremy Strong will play Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Reckoning. Helmed by Aaron Sorkin, the upcoming film will serve as a companion piece to David Fincher's The Social Network, which premiered in 2010.
Eisenberg, who portrayed Zuckerberg in the original movie and received BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Academy Award nominations for his performance, ruled out the possibility of reprising the role. Appearing on the Today show on 30 October, he explained: 'For reasons that have nothing to do with how amazing that movie will be... when you play a character, you feel, at some point, you've grown into something else.'
Set 17 years after the events of The Social Network, the sequel follows Facebook engineer Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) as she teams up with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) to blow the whistle on Facebook's darkest secrets. Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, Billy Magnussen and Betty Gilpin are also set to appear.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Strong revealed why he signed on to play Zuckerberg. 'It's one of the great scripts I've ever read... It speaks to our time, it touches the third rail of everything happening in our world.' Asked if he had talked to Eisenberg about the role, Strong replied: 'No, I think that has nothing to do with what I'm going to do.'
The Social Reckoning is slated for release on 9 October 2026.
