A military base in Burkina Faso has been struck by a devastating drone attack, resulting in the deaths of dozens of soldiers and wounding many more, according to reports from the West African nation's state broadcaster.
The assault targeted a base in the town of Oudalan, located in the volatile northern region near the border with Mali. This area has become a hotspot for violence linked to jihadist groups affiliated with both al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

Initial reports indicate a severe loss of life. RTB television stated that at least thirty soldiers lost their lives, with many more sustaining injuries in the precise and deadly strike. The attack represents one of the single most deadly incidents for Burkinabe forces in recent memory.

This tragedy underscores the intense and worsening security crisis in the Sahel region. Burkina Faso has been grappling with a violent insurgency that spilled over from its northern neighbour Mali in 2015. The conflict has since displaced over two million people and claimed thousands of lives.
The nation is currently under the rule of a military junta, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who seized power in 2022 promising to secure the country. However, the frequency and brutality of attacks have only intensified since the transition to military rule.
