Cucumber storage hack keeps them fresh for 19 days

Cucumbers can stay fresh and crisp for up to 19 days when wrapped in paper towels and sealed in a zip-lock bag on an upper fridge shelf, according to food experts at The Kitchn.

The experts tested nine different storage methods and found this two-layer approach to be the undisputed winner. By day eight, the paper towels had grown damp, but the cucumber remained in perfect condition. It stayed flawless through day 15 and continued to hold up exceptionally well on day 16, lasting a total of 19 days.

Why the towel-wrapping method works

The food experts said: "The towel-wrapping method was interesting. It helped to wick away the moisture that seemed to contribute to sliminess and squishy spots, and the sealed bag seemed to offer more protection than an unsealed bag."

Both moisture loss and moisture accumulation appear to be the principal causes of spoilage. Protecting cucumbers in some form — whether by wrapping them in paper towels or cling film, or placing them in a bag — offers the greatest shelf life, as unwrapped cucumbers tended to deteriorate most rapidly.

Other methods compared

Leaving a cucumber on the counter at room temperature kept it in good condition for several days, but by day seven, mouldy soft patches had appeared. Storing it unwrapped in the fridge door kept it fresh for five days, before shrivelling with soft spots by day seven. Leaving it unwrapped on a fridge shelf led to shrivelling within four days.

Placing the cucumber unwrapped in the crisper drawer left it slightly withered and soft after four days, with noticeable soft spots and squidgy ends by day seven. Wrapping it in cling film and storing it in the fridge door extended its lifespan by just one day compared to leaving it unwrapped.

Wrapping the cucumber in paper towels and placing it in a loose bag inside the crisper drawer allowed it to last for 10 days. Wrapping it in cling film and storing it in the crisper drawer kept it fresh for at least 12 days, though slight dimpling appeared after 10 days.

Placing the cucumber in a zip-lock bag alongside a spoon on a fridge shelf kept it firm with smooth skin for 11 days. By day 14, soft spots had started to form at the ends, though it still appeared edible, and by day 15 it had turned squidgy and was covered in an opaque white slimy film.
