A chef from Devon Cookery School has shared a technique to prevent eggs from sticking to a steel pan, and it costs nothing. The trick relies entirely on heating the pan to the correct temperature, which can be checked with a drop of water.
Cooking eggs in a frying pan can be tricky, from fried eggs breaking apart to scrambled eggs clinging to the surface. The chef explained that most people make a fundamental error when cooking eggs, and it has nothing to do with the utensils or ingredients.
Preheating the pan
The technique centres on preheating the pan. The chef advised putting it on a medium heat and, every so often, splashing in some water. "We don't want it to sizzle away," she said.
In a demonstration, water added to the pan formed small droplets that glided across the surface. The chef said: "This is your sign that your pan is hot enough, and you have now created a non-stick base. You're good to go."
Viewers share their experiences
Numerous viewers responded to the TikTok demonstration, sharing their own tips. One commented: "I use stainless steel and cast iron, both my favourite and I can handle them with no problems. Also, make sure the product you put on the pan is not straight from the fridge. Too cold can stick."
Another said: "I get the pan to the right heat but I let the fat melt before using it. After watching your video, I notice you went straight in with the eggs straight after the butter so I'll try that next time."
A third viewer stated: "Managed to learn this recently after trial and error but then moved to induction hob and I'm ruining it every time."
