Air fryer cleaning hack: 1 item makes it spotless in minutes

Cleaning expert Ida, known on TikTok as @cleaningwithida to her 2.3 million followers, has shared a no-scrub method for cleaning an air fryer. The hack uses just dish soap and bicarbonate of soda.

Ida starts by removing the air fryer trays and placing them on her kitchen worktop. She applies dish soap and bicarbonate of soda to the trays, then fills them with hot water. The mixture is left to soak for 15 minutes before the trays are transferred to the sink, rinsed thoroughly, dried, and returned to the appliance.

How often should you clean your air fryer?

Appliance manufacturer Russell Hobbs advises washing the basket after every single use to "protect it from the build up of food." The brand adds that if you use air fryer liners, you may not need to clean the basket as often, but it should still be cleaned after every few uses.

The basket and detachable crisping plate are typically dishwasher safe, though a more thorough clean may be needed if stubborn food residue or grease accumulates.

Don't forget the exterior

The exterior of the air fryer is often overlooked. Although it is not directly involved in cooking, it can develop an oily film or food splatters through regular use. Experts at Lakeland recommend wiping it down with a cloth and mild detergent, ensuring it is completely dry before using the appliance again.

Why cleaning matters

Leftover food particles can become "a breeding ground for bacteria," according to Sage Appliances. A build-up of grease and grime can also affect the appliance's performance. If the heating element becomes coated in grease, heat distribution will be compromised, potentially resulting in "uneven cooking." Grease can also obstruct airflow, so regular thorough cleaning is recommended for perfectly cooked meals.
