PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers in the UK and beyond are expressing significant frustration after a persistent outage has left a key feature of their subscription unusable for days. The problem centres on the cloud streaming service for classic PS3 titles, a major selling point of the top-tier membership tier.
Widespread Outage with No Official Word
Gamers hoping to dive into backwards-compatible classics like Ratchet and Clank or Fallout: New Vegas have found themselves unable to launch games via streaming. The issue, reported widely on social media and forums like Reddit, appears to have begun around 19 January 2026. Attempts to stream result in a sound playing before the process stalls entirely.
Frustration has been compounded by a lack of communication from Sony. Players contacting PlayStation Support have been told the problem is a 'temporary bug' with no available workaround or estimated time for a fix. One support message seen by users stated the team was 'still waiting for an announcement from Sony directly'.
Subscribers Feel Short-Changed
The silence has left many feeling their subscription fee, which can be over £50 for an annual Premium membership, is currently being wasted. One user vented online, calling the situation '£50 down the drain'. Another explained they had upgraded their subscription specifically to stream Batman: Arkham Origins with a partner, only to find the feature non-functional immediately after payment.
Liam Ryder, Digital Production Editor, highlighted the community's annoyance. The sentiment is clear: paying for a premium service that fails to deliver, without acknowledgement or a timeline for resolution, is unacceptable to the player base.
A Potential Workaround Emerges
Amid the complaints, some players have discovered a partial solution. While launching games directly from the PlayStation Plus section on a PS5 console remains broken, there is a reported workaround. Users can access the PlayStation app on a PC, browse the PS3 catalogue, and add desired games to their library from there.
Once added via PC, the titles reportedly become accessible for streaming from the 'My Library' section on the PS5 itself. This suggests the fault is isolated to the discovery portal, not the entire streaming infrastructure. However, this fix is not ideal and requires extra steps, doing little to quell the anger over the core service failure and poor communication from Sony.
For now, Premium members are left in limbo, awaiting an official statement and a permanent fix for the broken PS3 game streaming service they pay a premium to access.
