Portable air conditioning units are becoming increasingly popular in the UK as summers get hotter. We tested six models to find the best for cooling power, noise, and energy efficiency, and we also look at greener alternatives like fans and evaporative coolers.
Why consider air conditioning?
Most UK homes are built to retain heat, making bedrooms upstairs particularly hot during heatwaves. A portable aircon unit can cool a single room, helping you sleep better. However, it’s important to consider the environmental impact, as air conditioning contributes to carbon emissions unless powered by renewable energy.
Our top picks
The Meaco MC10000 came out on top overall. It cooled a room by 3C in 15 minutes and 6C in two hours, and uses R290 refrigerant with a low global warming potential of 3.3. It costs £459.99 and is currently out of stock, with restock expected on 27 November.
For large rooms, the Dimplex Eco IQ offers 12,000 BTU and app control, but it’s a bit loud. The Midea PortaSplit is a unique portable split system that’s quiet and energy-efficient, but it’s bulky and only suitable for homes with a balcony or suitable window. The Devola DVAC09CCB is a good value option for medium rooms, with app control and a low GWP refrigerant.
Alternatives to air conditioning
Fans and evaporative coolers are cheaper and greener. Fans don’t lower room temperature but create a breeze that helps sweat evaporate. Evaporative coolers humidify the air and can cool by a degree or two, but they’re not suitable for damp homes. Natural methods like closing curtains and opening windows in the evening can also help.
If you do buy an aircon, choose a durable model from a trusted brand, and power it with renewable energy if possible. Running it during off-peak hours can also reduce its carbon footprint.
