AirPods 5 review: ANC upgrade and lower price impress

Apple has released its fifth-generation AirPods, and for the first time, active noise cancellation (ANC) is built into the entry-level model. The price has also dropped by £5 compared with the previous generation, a rarity in a market where most gadget costs are rising.

Two models, lower prices

The AirPods 5 series comes in two versions. The more expensive model costs £139, which is £40 less than the equivalent top-tier AirPods 4 launched in September 2024. It includes the wireless charging case and longer battery life. The entry-level version, previously £129 without ANC, now costs £119.

Apple says the new earbuds have the best ANC of any open-ear design. The open fit avoids the pressure of in-ear tips, but lets more outside sound in, which is where the improved noise cancellation comes into play.

Design and durability upgrades

The design looks identical to the AirPods 4, but there are unseen changes. Both models have an IP57 rating, meaning they can survive immersion in water up to 1 metre deep for 30 minutes, a step up from the IP54 splash resistance of the previous model.

The more expensive model adds a volume control on the stem, a feature previously only on the AirPods Pro 3. The wireless charging case supports Qi pads, the Apple Watch charging puck, and USB-C. Find My support includes a speaker on the case to help locate it if misplaced.

Audio and performance

Technology critic David Phelan tested the AirPods 5 before they went on sale, comparing them with AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3. He found the ANC improvement palpable, though not as strong as on the Pro 3. Transparency mode has also been enhanced for a more natural effect.

Live Translation, which provides spoken translations in your ears, and Siri AI are available, though the latter requires the latest iOS. The earbuds can switch audio automatically between an iPhone and a Mac.

Battery and verdict

Battery life is four hours with ANC on for the standard model, and five hours for the version with the wireless charging case. Total battery, including the case, is 20 hours for the standard model and 22 hours for the wireless case version. A five-minute charge provides about an hour of playback.

For existing AirPods 4 users, the ANC improvement alone is worth the upgrade, according to Phelan, and it is now available on the entry-level model. The increased water resistance and lower price add to the appeal. AirPods Pro 3, at £200, still offer a snug fit, eight hours of battery life, a heart rate sensor, a hearing test feature, and stronger ANC suitable for plane travel.
