UK email users are being urged to report suspicious emails after Action Fraud revealed that over 43 million scam messages were reported between January and May 2025. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has removed 400,000 scam websites as a result of these reports.
Action Fraud advises that simply deleting scam emails does not help stop cyber criminals. Instead, users should forward suspicious emails to report@phishing.gov.uk. The NCSC can then investigate and remove fraudulent addresses and websites.
Scam emails often aim to trick recipients into clicking links that download viruses or steal personal information, a practice known as phishing. Common targets include Netflix and Spotify, with fake messages about cancelled subscriptions. Amazon has also warned of scams claiming Prime membership fees are rising, urging users to verify via the official app or website.
By reporting phishing attempts, users can reduce the number of scam emails they receive and protect others from cyber crime. The NCSC emphasises that reporting is free and takes only a minute.
