More than 20,000 users log on each year to Stirling's free city-centre Wi-Fi service, five years after its launch in 2021. The initiative, a partnership between Go Forth Stirling BID and Stirling Council, covers the entire city centre and has seen strong adoption among residents, visitors, and businesses.
User Statistics and Demographics
New figures reveal that each user spends an average of half an hour online, with 94 percent connecting via mobile phone. The majority of users are young people aged 18 to 24. So far in 2026, the service has been accessed by 8,555 users, while 2025 recorded 22,301 visits. The annual average over the previous two years was approximately 20,000 users.
Coverage and Integration
The Wi-Fi network covers key outdoor areas within the city centre BID zone and integrates seamlessly with the Thistles Wi-Fi network, providing a free and simple connection for visitors and residents to stay connected while exploring the city.
Strategic Importance
Danielle McRorie-Smith, Project Director of Go Forth BID, said: “We’re committed to promoting Stirling as a Digital City and supporting a smarter, more connected city where digital connectivity is a central part of the visitor experience. The free and fast public network helps people discover businesses and find recommendations while they're in the city. And that experience will be further enhanced following the launch of ‘In Stirling’ which will give residents and visitors information on absolutely everything Stirling has to offer in the palm of their hand.”
Funding and Background
The connectivity was a key idea in Go Forth’s 2017-2022 business plan. BID members have also benefited from the system’s advertising capabilities. The scheme was part-funded by a Stirling Council grant of £47,000 and an additional £10,000 from the Scottish Government’s Regional Recovery Fund, highlighting the importance of local investment in internet connectivity and digital transformation.
