A major technical problem at Cloudflare caused widespread disruption to websites including X (formerly Twitter), ChatGPT, and Letterboxd on Tuesday. Users attempting to access these sites saw error messages indicating an internal server error on Cloudflare's network.
Cloudflare, which provides internet infrastructure and security services for roughly one-fifth of all global websites, acknowledged the issue in a statement: 'Cloudflare is aware of, and investigating an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers.' The outage also affected outage-tracking website Down Detector.
Alan Woodward, professor of cybersecurity at the University of Surrey, commented: 'The downside of being a gatekeeper and distribution network for such big brands is that if this vital system fails, no one can use your service.' He noted that such networks are designed to avoid single points of failure, making the incident surprising.
Cloudflare's chief technology officer, Dane Knecht, confirmed that services were 'fully operational' by the evening. He explained that initial efforts resolved traffic issues by 14:30 UTC, but additional work was needed to fully restore the control plane, including the dashboard and APIs.
Lee Skillen, CTO of Cloudsmith, warned that such outages, though rare, are inevitable in deeply interconnected systems. He said: 'Expect things to fail. Every service with real users will eventually get hit by something.' Cloudflare has stated that no configuration changes are being made at this time, and a deeper investigation into the disruption is ongoing.
