Coronation Street confirmed on Monday that Celeste Butterfield is Bernie Winter's long-lost aunt, but fans are already predicting another twist in the storyline.
The mysterious woman, played by Frances Barber, arrived in Weatherfield last week and enlisted undertaker Todd Grimshaw to help plan her funeral, claiming she only has weeks to live. In the latest episode, Celeste had just left a meeting with Todd when Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) spotted her relative and coldly told her: "Do us a favour... crawl back under your stone."
Twins revelation
Celeste responded: "Nice way to speak to your own flesh and blood," and when Bernie told her to go away, she said: "Stubborn, like your mother." Bernie, already emotional because it would have been her late son Paul's birthday, walked off, and Celeste told Todd: "Her mum and me were twins," confirming herself as Bernie's aunt.
Bernie later spoke to Roy at the café, acknowledging that it would have been her son's birthday but insisting her low mood was not related to that. She simply said she had "seen a ghost" but would not elaborate. Todd then called round to persuade Bernie to reconnect with Celeste, but she refused, saying: "Do you know what, Todd? I haven't got the headspace for this right now, and having spoken to Christina, I'd sort your own life out before you interfered in mine."

Fans took to social media to speculate about the family rift, with one writing on X: "Wonder what the big secret family rift is between Celeste and Bernie." Another said: "I'm loving Bernie's Aunt, wish they didn't bring her in only to kill her off," while a third joked about the soap's frequent use of long-lost relatives, writing: "Oh great a long lost relative - such a fresh storyline - haven't had one of those for years!"

Bernie herself was revealed to be the long-lost mother of DC Kit Green, and when she appeared in 2019, she was the estranged mother of Gemma Winter. Recently, newcomer Idris Nazir (Junade Khan) told Alya (Sair Khan) he was not her long-lost cousin but her long-lost uncle.
In 2018, Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) learned that Jackie, who shared a prison cell with Deirdre Barlow, was not his real mother, and that Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney), who arrived in 2023, was. His long-lost dad later turned up as part of Cassie's exit storyline. This year, Shona Ramsey's long-lost sister Jodie arrived as part of a crossover with Emmerdale, and Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) discovered that Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) was actually his long-lost mother. Steve McDonald also learned he had a half-brother in newcomer Ben Driscoll (Aaron McCusker), after it was revealed his father Jim had an affair with Maggie (Pauline McLynn).
One fan recently raged: "So, so sick of these relative twists. I'm not your this, I'm you're that. Corrie is using the plot device far too often now and it's just a bit boring and embarrassing. I think all the other soaps have secretly been jealous for years that EastEnders made the real impact on that one with 'You ain't my muvva.'"
