Dale Vince, the outspoken founder of green energy supplier Ecotricity, has launched a groundbreaking mobile plan designed to shield children from the pervasive influence of social media and tech giants. The initiative, called Just Talk, offers unlimited UK calls and texts but crucially blocks all internet access, responding to what Vince describes as the "number one ask" from concerned parents.
Targeting Tech Giants and Harmful Content
In a bold move, Vince has directly criticised billionaires Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, accusing their platforms of having "unfettered access to our children." He argues that irresponsible tech companies are exposing young people to harmful content that piles pressure and risk onto them. The new SIM-only plan, priced from £4 a month, aims to make "phones phones again and kids kids again" by eliminating online distractions.
This launch comes at a time of intense global debate over children's digital safety. Governments worldwide, including Australia, which implemented a ban in December, are considering social media restrictions for under-16s. In the UK, more than 60 Labour MPs have recently urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to follow suit, with Sir Keir stating that "all options are on the table" regarding a potential ban.

Ecotalk, the mobile venture founded by Vince in 2018, operates by piggybacking on EE's network and dedicates its profits to environmental causes. The company focuses on land restoration and rewilding projects across sites in Sussex and Devon. It has also partnered with Springwatch presenter Chris Packham, who serves as its chief ecologist, to advance these conservation efforts.
Vince emphasised the urgency of the situation, declaring, "We're not waiting for Westminster to find its backbone - we're acting now with our kids SIM. We're saving children from the clutches of the tech bros." He believes that proactive measures are necessary to combat the negative impacts of smartphone overuse, which remains a significant concern for many families.
