WhatsApp has opened early reservations for usernames, allowing users to secure a unique identifier for the app before the feature officially launches later this year. This move aims to enhance privacy by enabling people to join groups and chat with new contacts without sharing their phone numbers.
How the Username Feature Works
Instead of using a phone number, users can create a unique username to connect with others. The early reservation system lets users claim their preferred username now, ahead of the full rollout. WhatsApp stated: "You can reserve a username to use later this year when we launch this feature."
With over three billion people on WhatsApp, name overlaps are common. The company explained: "That's why we're opening reservations early so everyone has the opportunity to select the username that matters to them."
Privacy and Control
WhatsApp emphasized that usernames are designed to keep conversations private. There is no directory or suggestion feature—others must know the exact username to contact a user for the first time. Additionally, an optional username key can be enabled, requiring others to provide the key to send a message.
The company added: "Usernames are our latest step to make WhatsApp even more private." Once usernames launch, when messaging a person or business for the first time, the user's phone number will not be visible if the username is enabled.
Reserving a Username
To reserve a username, users can go to WhatsApp, tap Settings, then Account, and select Username. From there, they can either create a custom username or use the built-in username generator. WhatsApp also noted that creators, small businesses, and organizations can claim their existing Instagram or Facebook username on WhatsApp to maintain a consistent online presence.
The feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming months, and users will be notified within WhatsApp when it becomes available in their country.
