Thousands of Duolingo users reported problems accessing the app on Wednesday evening, with many saying they were suddenly logged out or unable to log in. The company confirmed it was investigating the disruption on October 21, with its status page reporting increased errors and listing a "major outage."
Users report login problems and streak fears
A large number of users took to social media to describe their experiences. One user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: "is duolingo down?? i'm about to lose my streak" Another added: "Yes mine has logged me out. I better not lose my 1357 day streak" A third wrote: "Yes it is, suddenly my account logged out by itself"
Others raised concerns about whether their lesson streak on the language-learning app would be impacted by the outage. One user responded to Duolingo's update, writing: "Hope this is solved soon, don't want to lose my 1200+ day streak like that"
Duolingo confirms investigation and streak protection
Duolingo's official X account quoted the first post and wrote: "We’re aware of login issues and are working to restore access as quickly as possible. Your streak will be protected!"
The company's official status page said the issue first arose at 13:32 EDT (6.32pm BST) on Wednesday. Another user joked about receiving compensation for the disruption, asking: "As an apology for the inconvenience can we have double the energy???"
