CatchCat Returns to Google Play After Viral Surge Overwhelms Servers
CatchCat Returns to Play Store After Viral Surge

CatchCat, a viral Android mobile game dubbed 'Pokemon Go for cats' by users, has returned to the Google Play Store after a chaotic 48-hour removal forced by overwhelming demand. The game, created by developer Sebastian Seidel, allows players to 'catch' real-life cats they spot on the street using augmented reality technology.

How CatchCat Works

Similar to Pokemon Go, players wander streets and entice cats by offering virtual 'food'—dragging and holding tins of cat food over the cat's image. Once caught, cats receive a unique nickname and a 'rarity' rating. Players can rename their feline finds and track progress with a field journal. Captured cats are transformed into collectable cards reminiscent of the Pokemon Trading Card Game.

Viral Surge Overwhelms Servers

Launched on Sunday, June 21, CatchCat attracted 2,000 users on day one, according to Seidel. The game was shared widely across social media, leading to an unexpected surge in downloads that the developer was not prepared for. Seidel admitted on X (formerly Twitter): "I got way more signups than expected on day one." Within hours, Android users treated their neighbourhoods like cat-exclusive safari zones.

As a result, the server began to struggle with immense demand. Seidel chose to remove the game from the Google Play Store to new users to fix "messy" launch bugs. The outage was short-lived; a day later, CatchCat returned to the Play Store and became available for new users as of 9am on Wednesday, June 24.

iOS Version in Development

Seidel has confirmed he is working on an iOS version of the app to allow iPhone players to join the feline fun. On the Google Play Store, CatchCat's description reads: "CatchCat turns everyday cat moments into a real-world collecting game you play with your camera, your friends, and your competitive side. Spot a cat, snap the photo, and add it to your growing collection of unique catches—each with its own personality, rarity, and charm. Hunt for rare cats, build your dream collection, and challenge friends in fast-paced battles to climb the leaderboards. Whether you are catching neighborhood legends, your own chaotic house cat, or the ultimate rare find, every catch counts."

Impact and Future

The game's rapid rise highlights the demand for augmented reality pet-collecting experiences. With the server fix and planned iOS release, CatchCat aims to expand its player base and provide a stable platform for cat enthusiasts worldwide.
