Lewis Hall delivered another standout performance as Newcastle beat Tottenham 2-0 away, reinforcing the case for Manchester United to pursue a £60m move for the left-back.
Hall was among the top performers in the previous week's match against Liverpool, though his display was overshadowed by a stoppage-time penalty that allowed Dominik Szoboszlai to equalise. Against Spurs, the English full-back showed strong mental resilience to bounce back, impressing as Matthias Jaissle's side secured an early-season victory.
Defensive heroics catch the eye
Hall settled quickly, curling a wide free-kick to the back post for Yoane Wissa to attack. Moments later, he came to Newcastle's rescue as Pedro Porro found himself with the goal gaping just a few yards out. The Spanish defender fired a shot, but Hall darted across to make an incredible block and prevent Spurs from taking the lead.
That second action may further pique the interest of Michael Carrick and Manchester United. The Red Devils have been categorically told that Newcastle will not sell Hall, even for £60m. A world-record fee for a left-back would be required, currently standing at Bayern Munich's £68m signing of Lucas Hernandez in 2019.
United's defensive search
United have moved quickly to try to recruit another left-back to compete with Luke Shaw, but they have been knocked back by Barcelona's Alejandro Balde and now want Aston Villa defender Ian Maatsen. Hall would represent a massive upgrade on each of those three players.
Shaw is a defensive specialist, and Hall would add another dimension going forward, in addition to his work at the back. Shortly after half-time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Hall darted forward and a right-footed effort curled narrowly over the bar. He has just two goals since joining Newcastle three years ago but is a constant threat with his clever movement and crossing ability.
Next step for INEOS
Last year, United spent big on three forwards and have done so again in midfield through Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba. The next step is transforming Carrick's defence, and INEOS could kickstart that process by splashing out on Hall.
