Struggling to sleep during a heatwave is a common problem, but an overlooked household appliance could be the solution. While electric fans are often used, they are not always effective. Sleep expert Dave Gibson from The Sleep Site, speaking exclusively to Marks Electrical, recommends using a dehumidifier instead.
How a Dehumidifier Helps You Sleep
Our core body temperature naturally drops by 0.5–1°C as we fall asleep. However, hot and humid conditions can prevent this cooling process, leading to restless nights. A dehumidifier removes excess moisture from the air, allowing sweat to evaporate from your skin and enabling your body's natural cooling mechanism to work.
Dave Gibson advises setting the relative humidity to 40-60%. Going drier can dry out your nose and throat, making breathing uncomfortable and increasing snoring. He also notes that the gentle hum of a dehumidifier can act as white noise, masking sounds from inside and outside the bedroom.
Air Purifier for Hay Fever Sufferers
If hay fever is disrupting your sleep, an air purifier might be a better option. It filters out airborne pollen, dust, and pet hair, helping you breathe more easily and reducing congestion, sneezing, and itchy eyes. For best results, run it with windows closed to recirculate low-pollen air.
Using these appliances can make a significant difference in sleep quality during warm weather, without relying solely on fans.
