Morocco's teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi has become one of the most sought-after young talents in world football, with Arsenal, Manchester United, and Liverpool leading a host of European giants monitoring his progress at the 2026 World Cup.
World Cup Breakout
The 18-year-old has played a key role in Morocco's campaign, starting both of their opening matches. He helped secure a 1-1 draw with Brazil before a 1-0 victory over Scotland. Bouaddi was rested for the 4-2 win against Haiti but is in contention to start against the Netherlands in Guadalupe, with the match kicking off at 2am Tuesday UK time.
Morocco have already reached the round of 32, and Bouaddi's performances have caught the eye of Europe's elite. Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain are also linked with the midfielder.
Forged in France
Born in Senlis, northern France, to Moroccan parents, Bouaddi represented France at every youth level from under-16 to under-21. His club career began at lower-league Creil, where he spent nine years before joining Lille in 2021. At age 16, he became Lille's youngest debutant and signed his first professional contract. He extended his deal in December 2025 and made 42 appearances last season, helping Lille finish third in Ligue 1 and qualify for the Champions League.
Style of Play
Bouaddi is a defensively diligent midfielder who excels at breaking up play and snuffing out attacks. Operating at the base of midfield, he is known for being 'press resistant'—a key attribute for teams that build from deep. At 6ft 1in, he uses his body to shield the ball and possesses the athleticism to drive forward. He is also a skilled dribbler who glides around the pitch, progressing the ball effectively. Both Lille and Morocco employ a 4-2-3-1 formation, which suits his positional awareness.
Deciding His Destination
Bouaddi is under contract with Lille until 2029, and the club reportedly values him at £43 million. With multiple top clubs interested, a bidding war appears likely. Bouaddi has acknowledged the attention but remains focused on the World Cup. "For the moment, I'm only focused on the World Cup," he said earlier this month. "I am really happy to know that some clubs are interested in me, but for now, I'm here focused on the World Cup with Morocco and we will try to give everything to do our best."
