A new DOOM game is reportedly in development at Id Software, even as the studio faces significant layoffs as part of Xbox's broader restructuring. According to The Verge's Tom Warren, the cuts have not reduced Id to a support studio; instead, the team is in the early stages of a new DOOM title.
Layoffs and Studio Impact
As part of Xbox's 'Reset' restructure, 136 jobs have been cut from Id Software, reducing the studio from 185 employees in December 2025 to around 50—a 74% reduction. This led to concerns that Id would become a support studio for other Xbox Game Studios teams, but the studio has moved to dispel those rumors.
Id Software's Statement
On July 10, 2026, Id Software released a statement on X: “Thank you for all the support this week. While our studio was impacted, those changes were spread across teams. We still have the crew we need to build the games and tech we're known for. The team today is about the same size we were when making DOOM (2016). We have always had a flat studio where everyone is a maker, and we will remain true to that philosophy moving forward. We are focused on supporting each other and the team members impacted. We're going to keep building the great games and tech that have defined us for the past 35 years, and we're looking forward to seeing you at QuakeCon this August.”
New DOOM Game Details
Tom Warren added on X: “While the id layoffs have been deep, I understand the changes haven’t turned id into a support studio. Instead, they’re now in the early stages of a new Doom game.” This suggests the next installment is already underway, following the recent release of DOOM: The Dark Ages in 2025 and its Revelations DLC on July 9, 2026.
Id Tech Engine and Future
Id Software's proprietary Id Tech engine has powered critically acclaimed titles like DOOM (2016), DOOM Eternal, and DOOM: The Dark Ages, as well as other Bethesda games such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and the Wolfenstein series. The engine is known for delivering high frame rates and detailed environments on modest hardware. It remains to be seen whether Xbox will leverage Id's technology across other studios as part of its restructuring efforts.
