Mark Zuckerberg has outlined his vision for the future of communication, predicting that one day people will share thoughts and feelings telepathically through technology. In a Facebook Q&A session, the 31-year-old described this as the 'ultimate communication technology,' suggesting it will allow users to send 'full rich thoughts' directly to each other.
During the hour-long event, which attracted over 51,340 comments from users including Stephen Hawking, Richard Branson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Shakira, Zuckerberg discussed several trends. He said video will soon surpass photos in importance, followed by immersive experiences like virtual reality (VR), and eventually full sensory and emotional sharing.
Zuckerberg also predicted that within 12 years, VR headsets will shrink to the size of normal glasses. He envisions users being able to beam photos to others' headsets with a snap of their fingers. 'Oculus and VR in general are areas that I'm really excited about,' he said, calling VR and augmented reality the next leap beyond phones and tablets.
When asked by physicist Stephen Hawking which big scientific question he would like answered, Zuckerberg cited interests in immortality, curing diseases, and understanding the brain. He also expressed curiosity about whether a fundamental mathematical law governs human social relationships.
Responding to Arnold Schwarzenegger's query about fitness, Zuckerberg said he works out at least three times a week, often taking his dog running. The Q&A also touched on artificial intelligence initiatives, with Zuckerberg emphasising that increased sharing power will help society make better collective decisions.
