Meta's AI Clone of Zuckerberg Aims to Enhance Employee Engagement

Meta is reportedly developing an artificial intelligence clone of its founder and chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, designed to help employees feel more connected to the leader of the American tech giant. According to sources familiar with the matter, this AI clone is being trained on Zuckerberg's mannerisms, tone, and strategic thinking about the company's direction.

Early-Stage Development at Superintelligence Labs

The AI clone is currently in an early stage of development at Meta's Superintelligence Labs. Four individuals with knowledge of the project told the Financial Times that Zuckerberg is personally involved in training the AI, providing insights into his thought processes regarding company strategy. The clone is expected to be capable of holding real-time conversations, allowing employees to interact with a digital version of the founder.

This initiative differs from the "CEO agent" that Meta is also designing to assist Zuckerberg himself, as previously reported by the Wall Street Journal. The CEO agent is intended to help Zuckerberg access internal company information more efficiently, while the clone focuses on fostering a sense of connection among staff.

Part of Broader AI and Digital Avatar Efforts

The development of the Zuckerberg clone represents the latest effort by Meta to create digitalised versions of individuals, including its founder and users. In 2022, Zuckerberg introduced his own avatar within the metaverse, though it faced criticism for its limited facial expressions and subpar graphics. The following year, Meta launched celebrity-based chatbots featuring personas like Snoop Dogg, Tom Brady, and Kendall Jenner, but these were discontinued in 2024 due to lack of traction.

After investing tens of billions of dollars, Meta has scaled back its ambitious metaverse vision, which aimed to enable digital avatars to interact in virtual spaces. Currently, the company is focusing on allowing creators to build AI avatars of themselves. In 2024, Meta demonstrated a live example of a creator's AI persona and later provided tools for creators to develop AI versions to engage with followers, though these tools were restricted for teenagers in January.

Zuckerberg's Hands-On Approach and AI Strategy

The creation of the AI clone aligns with Zuckerberg's increased hands-on involvement at Meta, where he reportedly spends five to ten hours per week coding and participating in technical reviews. This move is part of a broader strategy to "elevate individual contributors and flatten teams" by integrating native AI tools, as Zuckerberg announced during a January earnings call. The goal is to enhance productivity and streamline operations within the company.

Meta's shift towards AI comes after reducing its focus on the metaverse, reflecting a strategic pivot in the tech industry. The Independent has reached out to Meta for comment on these developments, but no official statement has been released at this time.
