FIFA has been forced to release a statement after a VAR controversy overshadowed Scotland's 1-0 victory over Haiti in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The governing body confirmed a technical malfunction prevented the offside animation from being generated during Switzerland's penalty against Qatar.
VAR Technical Malfunction
During the match between Switzerland and Qatar in the San Francisco Bay Area, a brief technical outage prevented the onside animation graphic from being generated ahead of the penalty awarded to Switzerland in the 14th minute. FIFA stated that the issue was quickly resolved and the VAR workflow was not affected. The lines used by VAR did not show the attacking player to be in an offside position in either of the two situations immediately before the penalty decision.
Breel Embolo converted the spot kick, putting Switzerland on course for victory until Boualem Khoukhi scored a stoppage-time equalizer for Qatar.
Scotland's Historic Win
Scotland began their World Cup campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Haiti, their first World Cup triumph in 36 years. John McGinn scored the decisive goal in the first half, becoming Scotland's oldest World Cup scorer at 31 years and 238 days, surpassing Sir Kenny Dalglish's record set in 1982.
McGinn expressed pride in the achievement, saying: "It wasn't my best goal, who cares. Look at this man, absolutely unbelievable. Haiti are a good team, they played New Zealand and Peru off the pitch, it was a must-win game and we won."
England Kit Theft Update
England's World Cup preparations were disrupted when their kit and equipment were allegedly stolen upon arrival in Kansas City. Two men, Mustafa Salik and Erfan Kamal, have been charged with receiving stolen property, a Class D felony under Missouri law. The stolen property was valued at approximately $18,000 (£13,000).
Prosecutor Melesa Johnson said: "Jackson County will not tolerate any criminal activity that targets World Cup visitors, including the international teams that have travelled here to compete." Recovered items included four pairs of boots valued at £250 each and five pairs of shoes totalling $1,139.50.
Tornado Warning in Kansas City
England players were instructed to take shelter indoors after a tornado warning was issued in Kansas City. During the Scotland vs Haiti match, alerts warned of winds up to 80 miles per hour and the danger of flying debris. The severe thunderstorm warning was upgraded to a 'Tornado Watch' approximately 30 minutes later. Local residents lost power, but conditions improved by Saturday evening, leaving England's preparations for their group opener against Croatia unaffected.
Brazil Survive Scare
Brazil maintained their unbeaten record in World Cup openers since 1934 with a 1-1 draw against Morocco. Vinicius Jr scored a stunning equalizer after Ismael Saibari had given Morocco the lead. However, midfielder Casemiro had a difficult outing, winning only two of eight ground duels and receiving a yellow card before being substituted at half-time.
