Rumours surrounding The Batman Part II indicate that director Matt Reeves may be steering the sequel into even darker and weirder territory than its predecessor. According to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, the main antagonist could be the Court of Owls, a sinister secret society of Gotham's elite, rather than the previously speculated Harvey Dent. This shift suggests a departure from traditional Batman lore and a deeper dive into the city's corrupt underbelly.
Potential Villains and Casting Changes
Jeff Sneider reports that Sebastian Stan, initially rumoured to play Harvey Dent, might instead portray the serial killer Victor Zsasz. Zsasz, a sadistic psychopath introduced in 1992, fits Reeves's gritty vision of Gotham. Meanwhile, Brian Tyree Henry of Atlanta fame is tipped to play Harvey Dent, with speculation that his character may not transform into Two-Face, avoiding a storyline already explored in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.
The Court of Owls: A Fresh Antagonist
The Court of Owls, first appearing in Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's 2011 Batman comics, offers a new threat for live-action Batman films. Unlike the League of Shadows from Nolan's films, the Court is a domestic, entrenched ruling class that embodies Gotham's systemic corruption. This aligns with Reeves's portrayal of a city soaked in rainwater and civic decay, as seen in the first film.
Implications for the Sequel's Tone
Introducing the Court of Owls and Victor Zsasz suggests a more bizarre and unsettling narrative. Barry Keoghan's Joker may also appear, possibly confined to Arkham Asylum and used by Batman as a consultant, akin to Hannibal Lecter. This could set up the Joker as the ultimate villain for a potential third film, ensuring the trilogy ends on a toxic note.
