An English World Cup commentator has revealed how a member of her broadcast team was left bleeding after being struck by a flying bottle during Colombia's victory over Uzbekistan.
Incident at Azteca Stadium
Commentator Jacqui Oatley, who is working at the World Cup for American broadcaster FOX, shared details of the chaotic incident on social media following Colombia's 3-1 win at Mexico City's famous Azteca Stadium.
The former England international defender Warren Barton, who was working alongside Oatley on commentary duty, suffered a cut to his head after being hit by an object thrown from the crowd.
Details of the Attack
Oatley posted a photograph showing Barton with a visible wound on his forehead and revealed the former Newcastle United and England defender was left bleeding after the incident.
"That was an unusual one," she wrote. "Getting drenched in beer while commentating on a goal (quite refreshing, actually) and poor Warren Barton was whacked/cut in the head by a flying bottle! I heard him being hit and turned round to see blood trickling down his forehead. He's OK. Poor cameraman wiped out/injured by tackle too."
Barton's Condition
Despite the alarming scenes, Oatley confirmed Barton was not seriously injured and was able to continue his duties. The incident came amid a lively atmosphere inside the iconic stadium as Colombia began their World Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan.
Atmosphere and Match
Oatley praised the supporters who packed into the venue, describing the atmosphere as "unreal". She added: "Well done Colombia, decent debut by Uzbekistan too, stayed in the game til near the end. Unreal atmosphere at the old Azteca. Colombia fans are phenomenal."
The match marked Uzbekistan's first appearance at a World Cup finals, with the Central Asian nation remaining competitive before Colombia pulled away late on to secure all three points.
Warren Barton's Career
Former England defender Barton earned 16 caps for his country during a playing career that included spells with Newcastle United, Wimbledon and Derby County before moving into broadcasting after retirement.
