Manchester United have confirmed their 23-man squad list for the Premier League this season, with Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro among the notable absentees. United have three points from their opening two games and are preparing for an away trip to face Everton this weekend.
The club had the chance to name a 25-man squad after the summer transfer window closed on Tuesday, but submitted a list of just 23 players. Despite their omission, both Mainoo and Yoro will still be able to feature for United in the Premier League this term because they are classed as Under-21 players.
Under-21 rules explained
Premier League rules state that players born on or after January 1, 2005, do not need to be registered in a squad, meaning Mainoo and Yoro can be left out and still play in the top flight this season. United could have registered up to 25 players, yet only 23 were put forward.
Manuel Ugarte is included on the list despite picking up an injury during the World Cup that could rule him out until next year. United will have the chance to modify their squad list once the January transfer window closes.
JJ Gabriel also omitted
There was also no place for JJ Gabriel in the 23-man squad. As with Mainoo and Yoro, Gabriel is classed as an Under-21 player, so United do not need to name the teenager to call upon him this term.
Gabriel made his debut for United's Under-21s on Monday, scoring once and providing two assists in a 5-0 victory over Ipswich, with Michael Carrick praising the teenager.
"I thought the boys played ever so well, actually," said Carrick. "Really good team, really strong team that we had, and you could see that the quality. I really enjoyed the game."
"Really pleased with the boys, the way they went about it. The quality, the attitude, everything about the game was really good. So, really encouraged by that."
"JJ is one of the boys. He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit. He's getting experience all the time. He's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and just continuing his development."
