NBA superstar Victor Wembanyama stunned players and fans alike by dropping in on French second-tier side Provence Rugby to get a taste of what it takes to be a rugby player, being put through his paces on the training ground.
In footage posted by the club, the 22-year-old Frenchman was shown hitting the tackle pads, going through passing drills, and even having a go at a line-out routine or two. He was joined by San Antonio Spurs team-mate Harrison Barnes.
A towering presence at training
Wembanyama stands at a monstrous 7ft 4in and is known for his leftfield approach in finding ways to improve his game. He previously spent time with Shaolin monks in China last year in a bid to improve both his physical and mental strength.
In his time with Provence, Wembanyama even spent time with the rest of the team in a huddle ahead of a pre-season friendly. He was seen towering over his temporary team-mates.
Club confirms the visit
Confirming his visit, Provence posted on social media on Wednesday: "Well... it wasn't really a secret anymore. But it was time to share the images."
"This summer, @aixmaville came to spend a few days at @wemby at the Provence Rugby Campus, with a very clear desire: to work, discover and nourish another sporting universe," the post continued.
"At his side, @hbarnes, came to accompany him in this rugby bracket and who, too, lent himself to the game with a lot of curiosity, availability and simplicity. Physical Fitness, Contact Work, Team Training, Captain's Run... to live as close to the players as possible for our friendly match against @nissarugby."
Strong start to the season
Provence Rugby have enjoyed a strong start to the new season, with last Friday's win over Aurillac their fifth in as many games. They currently sit third in France's second tier.
"Beyond the athletes, what we'll remember most is their open-mindedness, simplicity and ease with which they integrated into the group," the club added. "Since? The Blacks started the championship with 5 wins in 5 games. We wouldn't say Victor and Harrison are on to anything... But we like the wink a lot."
Fans and players react
Fans were also impressed by what they saw. "Les Bleus have a 'secret weapon' for the 2027 Rugby World Cup!," commented one. "This guy is seriously a good one," said another. "Looks like they are playing with little rugby balls when VW is holding one," said another in a clear reference to Wembanyama's size.
"It was a great experience, seeing the team spirit they have over there," said Wembanyama. "It was very inspiring to see the relationship between team-mates, coaches and fans. The training was really hard, really good for stability, movement patterns and developing strength, but I am more grateful for the experience of how I was welcomed there. I have never been welcomed anywhere like this. I wasn't part of the team but they treated me like I was. I want to do it again."
