Tartan Army Gets Free Commonwealth Games Tickets

Members of the Tartan Army are being offered free tickets to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games as a "thank you" for their passionate support during the World Cup. The initiative, announced by Glasgow 2026 organisers, allows Scotland Supporters Club members to claim up to four complimentary tickets for a variety of sports and sessions.

Free Ticket Details

The free tickets cover events including para powerlifting at the SEC Armadillo and a 3x3 basketball match between Scotland and Australia, both on July 24. Also included are boxing, weightlifting, a morning athletics session on July 27, and the Scotland vs Jamaica netball match on July 29 at the OVO Hydro.

An email sent to Scotland Supporters Club members stated: "As our country now prepares to step up to give the world a true Scottish welcome for this summer's Commonwealth Games, we've teamed up with Glasgow 2026 to offer you a little thank you."

Organisers' Comments

Phil Batty, chief executive of Glasgow 2026, said: "The Tartan Army captured the hearts of so many at the World Cup and did Scotland proud. The incredible support shown for the national team is exactly the groundswell of energy we want behind Team Scotland as they prepare to compete on home soil at the Commonwealth Games. This ticketing initiative is a thank you to those fans."

Ticket Sales and Speculation

The free ticket offer has sparked speculation about overall ticket sales, as some free events feature the host nation. Tickets initially went on sale last October, with some fans reporting high prices. Speaking to the BBC, Batty described ticket sales as "really strong" and praised Glasgow's "amazing fanbase" for sporting events. He noted strong demand for swimming and cycling events, which were not included in the free offer. Organisers emphasised that the free tickets were limited in number.

Pricing and Availability

When tickets first went on sale, medal sessions started at £26, while non-medal sessions began at £17. The top-priced ticket was £150 for athletics medal events at Scotstoun Stadium, with £90 for a morning non-medal track cycling session. According to the Glasgow 2026 website, 27 sessions are listed as "selling fast," while 97 have "good availability." Tickets for the opening ceremony and other sporting events remain on sale.
