The World Cup 2026 quarter-finals continue tonight with an all-European showdown between Spain and Belgium in California.
Spain's defensive record under threat
La Roja have built their World Cup tournament thus far on a solid defence. The Euro 2024 winners are the only team yet to concede a goal in the competition, with goalkeeper Unai Simon keeping five consecutive clean sheets.
That record will surely be tested by a Belgium side that has scored 13 goals, including four against co-hosts USA in the last-16.
Belgium's transformation
The Red Devils have enjoyed quite a transformation after being held to draws in their opening two games in North America, but thumped New Zealand to top Group G on goal difference before staging a stunning comeback against Senegal in the round of 32.
By contrast, Spain's levels of control has increased since that shock goalless draw with Cape Verde as a 3-0 win over Austria was followed up with a 1-0 win against rivals Portugal courtesy of a Mikel Merino stoppage-time winner.
Semi-final prize
Tonight's victors will progress to the World Cup semi-finals to face pre-tournament favourites France after they beat Morocco on Thursday night thanks to second half goals from Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.
